The City of Shaker Heights, OH undergoes equity audit

INSIGHTS

In 2022, MGT conducted an Equity and Inclusion assessment for the City of Shaker Heights, Ohio which includes a comprehensive assessment of city policies and practices to determine strengths as well as persistent challenges to equitable service delivery to marginalized populations, and opportunities for growth and improvement in the City’s efforts. In addition, our work included stakeholder engagement to uplift the voices in order to understand the experiences of staff and leadership across the organization. Shaker Heights has a population of nearly 30,000. 54% of the population is White, 34% is Black or African American, 4.6% is Asian, 2.2% is Hispanic or Latino and .10% is American Indian or Alaska Native.

In June of 2021, Shaker Heights created and filled the position of Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer to help them achieve their goal to be diverse, equitable and inclusive both internally and in all they do in the community. MGT worked with City leadership to create an internal DEI committee who collaborated in the co-creation of a DEI Action Plan that lays out key priorities and initiatives related to enhancing the employee and resident experience. The impact this work will have on the residents of Shaker Heights is powerful and our team is honored to have been selected as partner.

Explaining the “why” our team was selected, Chief DEI Officer Colleen Jackson said, “We were looking for a diverse team with a history of doing DEI audit work in government, working with labor unions, and a team that offered a hybrid option instead of a fully virtual one.”
