Washington State University College of Medicine – Implementation Plan

CASE STUDIES

Washington State University (WSU) retained MGT to assist in developing a plan to implement the new College of Medicine and medical education program at its Riverpoint Campus in Spokane. The initial planning effort provided guidance to the university in order to achieve Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) preliminary accreditation. MGT assessed the need for additional physicians to serve Eastern Washington and undeserved areas across the state. The team identified gaps in the physician supply through an analysis of regional and national physician data. The consultants inventoried current WSU and local community assets relevant to health sciences and medical education program delivery. Through the study, the MGT team confirmed significant unmet need for more physicians and expanded access to medical education in Washington; identified an emerging model for medical education well-suited to address the unmet needs; determined that WSU already had significant capacity in place to develop and deliver an accredited medical education program; and developed a multi-year forecast of likely resource requirements that provides a cost-effective approach for WSU to pursue development of a new medical school.
