TAMPA, Fla., March 14, 2023 ―We know that cyber attacks are increasing for school districts across the country and their results can be devastating. According to a report from the U. S. Government Accountability Office, local and state officials cite loss of learning following a cyberattack ranges from 3 days to 3 weeks, and recovery time could take 2 to 9 months. Monetary losses to school districts range from $50,000 to $1 million due to expenses caused by a cyber incident.
The most significant incident of the year was the attack on Los Angeles Unified School District which, with more than 1,300 schools and 500,000 students, is the second largest district in the U.S. The MGT Technology Solutions team was engaged to help LAUSD address the breach’s impact.
To keep one of its long-term clients safe, Layer 3 Communications, a part of MGT, introduced Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District (CyFair) in Houston, Texas to another MGT Technology Solutions business, Cira Infotech.
Throughout the past year, Cira demonstrated to CyFair the importance of cyber assessments in protecting data, students, and the larger community. Cira showcased their engineering team’s depth of talent and experience working with other large school districts and, after meeting with CyFair to better understanding their environment, recommended a 3-phase security posture and risk assessment using the NIST CSF Methodology. The goal is to help further harden CyFair’s security posture and reduce the district’s overall threat risk.
We are confident that this assessment is critical to helping CyFair understand its maturity levels, technical vulnerabilities, and other potential deficiencies that can expose them to unnecessary risk. Once completed, our assessment will also provide a valuable road map of “next steps” the district can take (alongside our team) to improve their organization’s overall security, allowing them to focus on what matters most: accelerating students’ learning.
